Smelling The Roses

Are you like me?  Do you always have a list of things to do, places to go, chores to be done?  Of course you do.  Who doesn't?

There is the famous quote that says, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans."

I have a bad habit of living in this "let me just get it done" mentality and not enjoying the process.  I can't count how many times I prayed recently asking, "Just get me through May."  The commitments seem to be overwhelming at times and I look forward to turning the page on my calendar to see more empty spaces.

Truth is, May was great.  I entered the month with a feeling of dread, and when I sit back and reflect, it really was full of blessings.  I got to watch my boys play baseball outside in beautiful weather.  I saw Mary's love of running grow during track season.  I watched Ann read a book she wrote out loud at her school. I had fun going places with Matt everyday. I watched people enjoy eating the many things I had to bake this month.

I'm learning as I grow older that the things I don't want to do usually end up being the most fun and have a great deal of joy and reward in them.  I just have to make sure I look for it.

With that being said, I don't enjoy, and never will enjoy, packing these every night and will not miss it one bit this summer.

But I do see the joy in having food to eat.

See, I'm getting good at this.

  1. Hi Kathleen,
Yes, I can relate! Like you I'm learning to "stop and smell the roses". Great post! It helps us remember what TRULY matters.

  2. I don't like being really busy. I need downtime to recharge. That being said, I agree it's often those busy times that are the most fun. I didn't even want to go to the lake last weekend because of the car ride, the laundry after, I wanted to stay home and be quiet...but I am so glad we went!!
